IT’S not called gym-nice-tics but that’s what you will get at a club in Footscray.
The Footscray City Gymnastics Club is raising the bar in the inclusive stakes after winning the Gymnastic Victoria Award for Club of the Year (large club).
Club operations manager Tammy Robinson said the award was a reflection of the hard work of more than 1000 club members, coaches and support staff.
Ms Robinson said the club was judged on leadership, integrity and passion for promoting gymnastics but what set the club apart was its “inclusive culture”.
“We try to integrate children of all different abilities into our mainstream program and we have tailored programs for adults with disabilities,” Ms Robinson said.
“Our focus is gymnastics for all and our programs are aimed at getting people to move better, be healthier and have a positive experience. We use gymnastics as a tool to do this rather than looking at creating the next Olympic gymnast.
“We promote not just things taught in class but also skills of co-operation, teamwork, persistence, patience and strength of character.”
The club, which has been in Footscray for 35 years, runs classes for boys and girls from the age of six months to adulthood.
